Recently, my daughter asked my wife and I to explain the concept of values. This led to a conversation about privacy. “Privacy,” I said, “is something people value.” The conversation then pivoted to Millenials. Our theory, and rightly so, is that they do not value their privacy the way our parent’s generation did. Social tools like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Vine enable this new generation to live unfiltered lives. But that got me thinking. Would my parents have been so guarded had they had the social sharing networks we have today? Would their private lives have been so private? Would they have been more open about taboo subjects like divorce, disease and sexual orientation? Maybe they had the same need to share, but the technology of the day just couldn’t satisfy it. Showing guests slides of your summer vacation was cool back in the day. Would Flickr have been cooler? What do you think? Does technology feed the need, or create it? – Glen
